Jakarta, 21 April 2026 — The Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI-ICMA), together with SUN, has officially launched the Green Mining Innovation Challenge (Greenovation) 2026, a strategic competition initiative within Indonesia’s mining industry designed to accelerate the development of practical solutions for lower-carbon, more efficient, and globally competitive mining operations.
As one of the key pillars of the national economy, the mining industry plays a vital role in sustaining economic growth, industrial resilience, and Indonesia’s strategic supply chains. For this reason, transforming the sector is no longer optional, but essential to ensuring Indonesia’s long-term competitiveness.
Greenovation serves as a collaborative platform for professionals across the mining sector to present practical innovations that can address energy challenges, cost efficiency, operational productivity, and global sustainability demands.
According to various studies, the industrial sector, including mineral processing and smelting, remains one of the major contributors to national emissions. At the same time, the government continues to advance downstream industrialization, broader industrial development, and stronger national energy resilience. Therefore, decarbonizing the mining sector must be pursued through realistic and practical approaches that also maintain productivity.
Greenovation focuses on two of the most strategic transformation areas for the future of Indonesia’s mining industry:
1. Energy Mix Optimization & Mining Operational Efficiency
Encouraging innovation in renewable energy utilization, fuel efficiency, hybrid systems, and intelligent energy management systems to reduce energy costs and emissions without disrupting mining operations.
2. Electrification of Mining Vehicles & Heavy Equipment
Opening opportunities for solutions related to fleet and heavy equipment electrification, including implementation strategies, charging infrastructure, and scalable business models for the future of low-carbon mining operations.
“The coal mining industry plays an important role in supporting energy resilience, development, and the national economy. Amid a changing global landscape, strengthening competitiveness remains highly relevant. We see Greenovation as a platform that can encourage the exchange of ideas, technology development, and the emergence of initiatives from industry players, so that Indonesia’s mining sector can continue to adapt and grow more efficiently in the future,” said Gita Mahyarani, Executive Director of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI-ICMA).
“In the mining industry, energy is not only an operational necessity, but also a key determinant of competitiveness. Through Greenovation, we aim to encourage the development of solutions that can optimize the energy mix while creating sustainable cost efficiencies. Going forward, mining companies that are able to manage energy more intelligently will be in a stronger position to respond to market dynamics and global industry demands,” said Emmanuel Jefferson Kuesar, Director of Power, SUN.
Karina Darmawan, Director of Mobility, SUN, added, “Through Greenovation, we hope to encourage the emergence of creative and practical ideas from mining industry practitioners. Innovations that can support decarbonization in a meaningful way and deliver efficiency gains without compromising production effectiveness deserve recognition. With Greenovation 2026, we hope new ideas will emerge to support a more sustainable mining industry.”
With a panel of judges from various institutions, government bodies, academia, and the private sector, Greenovation reinforces its position as a prestigious innovation platform that connects the best ideas with real industry needs.
Total prizes worth hundreds of millions of rupiah have been prepared. In addition, the Gold Winner in each category will receive an exclusive opportunity to visit a renewable energy technology innovation center in China, as a form of appreciation for their contribution to advancing a more progressive and sustainable future for Indonesia’s mining industry.
Through Greenovation, APBI-ICMA and SUN hope to encourage the emergence of implementable solutions from within the industry itself, while strengthening Indonesia’s path toward a mining sector that is resilient, modern, low-carbon, and ready to respond to future challenges.
