SUN Pioneers Integrated Mining Electrification, Plans 80 MW of Power Generation and Over 1,000 Electric Vehicles

Berau, 30 October 2026 — SUN, an integrated energy and electrification solutions provider, marked a new milestone in the mining industry’s transformation with the groundbreaking of a green mining ecosystem in East Kalimantan. The initiative represents the first step towards developing up to 80 MW of power generation capacity, a 160 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and a fleet expansion to more than 1,000 electric vehicles to support a range of mining operations.

By integrating renewable energy generation, energy storage, charging infrastructure, electric vehicles, and operational management services, SUN delivers a comprehensive approach to electrification. This initial implementation lays the foundation for larger-scale development while demonstrating how technology can improve efficiency, operational reliability, and competitiveness in the mining industry.

Addressing Mining’s Energy Costs and Resilience Through Electrification

The mining industry faces substantial energy costs, particularly due to its reliance on diesel. Fuel price volatility, complex delivery logistics to mine sites, and supply reliability can all affect operating costs and productivity. Meanwhile, advances in solar energy, battery storage, and electric vehicle technology are creating more opportunities for mining companies to adopt efficient electrification solutions with measurable outcomes.

Karina Darmawan, Director of Mobility at SUN, explained that electrification is becoming increasingly relevant as a business strategy to strengthen mining competitiveness.

“For the mining industry, electrification is more than a sustainability strategy; it is a business decision to improve efficiency and competitiveness. Dependence on diesel creates challenges around costs, distribution, and supply reliability. As technology advances, mining companies now have more options to manage their energy needs more efficiently and reliably,” said Karina.

According to Karina, SUN focuses on delivering interconnected solutions, enabling customers to adopt electrification without having to develop each element of the infrastructure separately.

“SUN serves as an electrification partner, bringing together energy generation, energy storage, charging infrastructure, electric vehicles, and operational management. We want to demonstrate that green mining can be implemented in practice and deliver measurable business benefits,” she added.

Connecting Floating Solar and Electric Vehicles in One Ecosystem

The development integrates a range of solutions to support the transformation of energy and mobility in mining. These include floating solar installations on water-filled mine voids, enabling these areas to be used for renewable energy generation.

Floating solar is paired with BESS to store energy and manage its availability in line with operational requirements. The energy system is planned to expand towards up to 80 MW of generation capacity and 160 MWh of energy storage.

On the mobility side, the initial electric vehicle deployment provides the foundation for expanding the fleet to more than 1,000 units, including light operational vehicles and vehicles supporting mining logistics.

The ecosystem also includes charging infrastructure, workshop facilities, vehicle maintenance services, and a Fleet Management System to support fleet monitoring and management.

Through this approach, SUN combines vehicles and energy infrastructure with a service system designed to maintain vehicle availability, optimise energy use, and support the continuity of mining operations.

Enabling Adoption Through Electrification as a Service

Beyond technology readiness, substantial upfront investment requirements can present a barrier to electrification in mining. To address this challenge, SUN offers an Electrification as a Service model that enables companies to adopt electrification solutions without upfront capital expenditure (CAPEX), subject to the agreed service scope and commercial arrangements.

Under this model, SUN provides services spanning infrastructure planning and development, technology provision, and operational management and maintenance. This allows mining companies to focus on their core business while SUN manages their electrification infrastructure and supporting services through an integrated approach.

“Mining electrification goes beyond replacing diesel vehicles with electric alternatives. The priority is to ensure the entire ecosystem is ready, including energy supply, charging stations, workshops, maintenance, and fleet management systems,” Karina explained.

“Through a service model without upfront investment, we aim to make electrification more accessible to customers while providing reliable operational support. This implementation marks the first step towards larger-scale development, including expansion to more than 1,000 electric vehicles,” she continued.

Strengthening Industrial Competitiveness Through Green Mining

The groundbreaking marks an important milestone in developing a mining electrification ecosystem that connects energy and mobility within a single business approach. For mining companies, integrated solutions create opportunities to optimise energy costs, reduce reliance on diesel distribution, and improve operational control and efficiency.

By combining technology readiness, a flexible business model, and operational support services, SUN is strengthening its role as a strategic partner in the mining industry’s energy transition and electrification.

“Green mining does not have to represent an additional cost for the industry. With the right approach and technology, electrification can create opportunities to improve efficiency and competitiveness. This implementation is SUN’s first step towards delivering integrated electrification solutions at a larger scale and paving the way for the transformation of Indonesia’s mining industry,” Karina concluded.
